Not all dictatorships are totalitarian though.

This was such a fun reading, Barbara! your State of Rivers Report reminded mee of the Depth of the Danube Waters radio shows. I knew French numerals before speaking French! Hugs!

Thank you. Clearly, we both had the privilege of learning foreign languages from the most riveting source material possible!

AND... knowing the Danube’s depth in three languages prepared us for deep dives into justice! Multilingual hugs right back at you, comrade in currents and causes x

Wow! I'm from Romania, a country that is "proudly" proclaiming itslesf as one of the most cruel former dictatorships in the world (I would say this is subjectively true, as you would have been shut if you attempted to leave the country). Also, my grandfather was jailed for political reasons.

So you can imagine how satisfying it was for me to find and read this honest reflection of how we, Eastern Europeans and dictatorships survivors really feel. Thank you!

My family always said our stories would be useful one day. Although I’m not sure this is what they had in mind...

And glad you mentioned that it was a crime to leave the country. I always tell people who believe in building walls around their country to stop immigration: Trust me, the walls are not just for keeping others out, they are also for keeping people in.
